Flaxseed oil is rich in omega-3, omega-6 and omega-9 fatty acids. The body cannot synthesise alpha-linolenic acid (an omega-3 fatty acid) or linoleic acid (an omega-6 fatty acid) so it is imperative to get the right balance of these from diet or supplementation. In Western diets today it is estimated that the ratio of omega-3 to omega-6 is significantly lower than recommended, with omega-3 intake generally needing to be increased. Low omega-3 levels can lead to an inflammatory effect on the body from too much omega-6 fatty acids. Flaxseed can contribute to improving the balance of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, which can result in an anti-inflammatory action. Added omega-9 may also contribute to reducing inflammation.
