Vitamin A is essential for many vital functions: vision (especially night vision), healthy skin and skin repair, healthy mucous membranes (such as the lining of the respiratory and digestive tracts), and for maintaining a healthy immune system. Vitamin A is vital to produce healthy epithelial tissue, made of closely-packed cells that act as a protective layer all over the body. Epithelial tissue typically produces mucus to lubricate body surfaces and act as a barrier against invasion by micro-organisms. Vitamin A also enhances and stimulates many immune functions such as antibody response, as well as the activity of various white blood cells. This helps promote healing and gives the body an increased resistance to infection.
