The human eye naturally contains the carotenoids lutein and zeaxanthin. The highest concentration of lutein and zeaxanthin is found in the macular region of the retina - lutein and zeaxanthin are also present in the eye's lens. Lutein and zeaxanthin naturally form a layer of yellow pigments in the macula which effectively serves as a natural filter for the most damaging light that enters the eye and reaches the retina (near-to-UV blue light). In human trials supplements high in natural lutein and zeaxanthin esters were shown to increase the density of yellow macular pigments. A higher macular pigment concentration and density is associated with better eye health and possibly delays the loss of youthful visual sensitivity.
As well as helping prevent retina damage by absorbing harmful light, lutein and zeaxanthin also have antioxidant properties and may help reduce the accumulated life-long effects of oxidative damage to the eye's retina and lens.
