A recent study* highlighted that pregnant women's iodine levels in Australia and New Zealand seem to be declining, and inadequate iodine intake is widespread amongst the general population. Iodine is required for the normal functioning of the thyroid gland, and is a crucial nutrient involved in the normal synthesis of thyroid hormones. Thyroid hormones interact with almost every cell in the body and regulate cellular metabolism including oxygen use. Thyroid hormones level are important for normal child growth and development. Adequate supply of iodine is crucial during and after pregnancy, as iodine plays an important role in your baby's brain development, mental development and physical motor skills. It can take up to 5 months to optimise iodine levels before pregnancy. Folic acid plays a critical role in cellular division and DNA and RNA synthesis. Cells need adequate folic acid in order to divide properly. The development and growth of a foetus can put increased demands in the mother for folate, since cell division is constantly happening. Supplementing folate for at least one month prior to conception and during pregnancy is highly recommended and may reduce the risk of neural tube defects in your unborn child.
