Supplementary beneficial bacteria, or probiotics, may help support the healthy lining of the gastrointestinal tract and a healthy normal immune system.
Keeping intestinal flora and bacteria in balance has an important role in our general health and wellbeing. Over 400 different species of bacteria normally reside in the human gastrointestinal tract, with the human colon being composed of up to 35-50% bacteria. In a healthy and well-functioning gastrointestinal system, the populations of beneficial bacteria and pathogenic (i.e. disease-causing) bacteria are balanced. The ‘good' bacteria helps support immune response but has to compete with pathogenic bacteria for space and nutrients within the gastrointestinal tract. Two strains of good bacteria, Lactobacillus Rhamnosus GG (LGG®) and Bifidobacterium Animalis (BB-12®), have been extensively studied in both children and adults and been shown to colonise the bowel, helping support a healthy normal immune system and healthy lining of the gastrointestinal tract. Research also suggests that the presence of LGG may help reduce the frequency and severity of mild upper respiratory tract infections (such as colds) among children attending daycare. It may also help reduce the number of days children remain absent from daycare due to illness. Both strains also help reduce the incidence and duration of diarrhoea in young children attending daycare, as well as helping with maintaining and rebalancing intestinal flora after antibiotic use.
